The bicycle helmet division of Lazer SA has split from the rest of the Belgian company following a management buyout.

Lazer – who also make motorbike and paragliding lids – say they decided to launch the helmet division as a standalone business because they have rapidly increased their share of the market.

Division manager Sean van Waes and sales manager Peter Steenwegen have formed a new company, Lazer Sport NV, which will be based in Antwerp. They will continue to sell helmets under the 'Lazer' name and sponsor teams including Katusha.

"Our objective has always been to find an excellent synergy between design, comfort and technology,” said van Waes. “We will continue our focus on developing highly valued products.”

Lazer were founded in 1919. Their helmets, which include mountain bike, road, BMX, children's and commuter models, are distributed in more than 50 countries.
