The new GoPro HERO4 Session launched today as a much smaller, more aero version of the standard HERO4 videocamera.

The HERO4 Session is waterproof without the need for separate housing and has a simpler, one-button operation. Pressing the button quickly turns the unit on and begins recording automatically.

HERO4 Session works with existing GoPro mounts and will retail for US$399 / £329 beginning July 12.

GoPro claims the Session to be 40% lighter than previous models, but did not specify a weight.

“With HERO4 Session, we challenged ourselves to produce the smallest, lightest, most convenient GoPro possible,” GoPro founder and CEO Nicholas Woodman said in a press release. “HERO4 Session combines the best of our engineering and user-experience know-how to deliver our most convenient life-capture solution, yet.”

HERO4 Session recrods in 1080p60, 720p100 and 1440p30 video along with 8MP photos in Single, Burst and Time Lapse modes.

A short press of the shutter button turns the camera on and video recording begins automatically. A long press of the shutter button powers the camera on and triggers Time Lapse photo capture. Press the shutter button again to save video or photo content and power the camera off.

While the on-camera functionality has been simplified, users can access an expanded set of controls with the GoPro App or Smart Remote.

The HERO4 Session has a dual-microphone system that GoPro says switches sound recording between microphones to reduce wind noise during activities.

The HERO4 Session has built-in WiFi and Bluetooth.

Expect to see the HERO4 Session in action at the Tour de France.
