A new initiative aims to get more children into entry-level bike racing by offering the opportunity to compete against cyclists of the same age and ability.
Go-Ride Racing has been launched by British Cycling in partnership with broadcasters Sky. The idea is that it will provide a stepping-stone between school or club coaching sessions and regional races.
Over 400 Go-Ride Racing events will be held this year in six disciplines – closed road circuit, grass track, cross-country mountain bike, BMX, cyclo-cross and cycle speedway. The races will be organised by volunteers from Go-Ride (a cycling development initiative for young people) and British Cycling coaches. Participating clubs will receive kit and prizes for events, as well as advice.
John Mills, coaching, education and development director at British Cycling, said: "Entry-level competition is fundamental to the introduction of young riders to competitive cycling and the launch of Go-Ride Racing will have a huge impact on the accessibility of the sport nationally. Thanks to the additional support from Sky we're able to provide Go-Ride clubs with everything they need to organise local events."
