Performance sportswear brand Rapha will release its first helmet on 20 September, which is essentially a special edition Giro Synthe MIPS.

Design elements unique to the Rapha helmet compared to the Synthe include reflective strips on the helmet straps, an opening in the back of the shell and textured strips running lengthwise across the top. There is a hi-vis yellow model and a black option with iridescent purple low panels.

Beyond the Synthe helmet mold and construction, plenty of Giro-branded elements remain including logos on the fit adjustment dial and the strap connectors.

Rapha isn’t trying to hide the Giro partnership though, the British company has worked on similar projects with shoes for years.

Before Alex Valdman joined Rapha as head of product design two years ago, he was design director at Giro's parent company BRG Sports. While his initial work at the company was on the clothing, more expansion products seem likely.

“This is quite likely the start of something further,” Rapha spokesman Derrick Lewis said of the Rapha helmet, which will retail for £225 / $330 / €305 [Editor's note: The original story said the helmet would be the same price as the Giro Synthe MIPS. We apologize for the error.]
