A cycling event offering the winner a year’s supply of bread is set to take place on 12 June.

The first ever Shaftesbury Cycle Revival includes a hill climb race up the iconic Gold Hill, a cobbled street made famous by the Ridley Scott-directed Hovis advert from the 1970’s.

The Gold Hill Honk is open to road and mountain bikes and will see 120 riders individually tackle the hill in an out-of-the-saddle sprint to the summit. Entry is £6 and the fastest rider of the day will take home as much Hovis as they can eat for a whole year.

A mixed terrain urban downhill event – the Shaftesbury Shooter – is scheduled for the same day and will see 70 riders attempt a course of concrete steps, tight corners, off-camber slopes and a rock garden. Entry is £10 and each rider gets two timed runs, with the top 10 fastest going through to a final shoot out. Entry to both events is on a first come, first served basis, while those taking on both events will get a discounted fee of £15.

Organisers hope the grass-roots event "evokes the spirit of fun and competitive riding with a festival feel throughout the day." The Shaftesbury Shooter kicks off competition from 12noon, while the Gold Hill Honk begins at 4.30pm. No entries will be accepted on the day, but can be completed by visiting www.shaftesburycyclerevival.co.uk.
