In conjunction with the recently announced XTR M9100 components and 2019 XTR Race and Trail pedals, Shimano has released updated versions of its top-tier XC and cyclocross S-Phyre XC9 shoes as well as its enduro-focused ME7 shoes.
S-Phyre SH-XC901 highlights
According to Shimano, the XC, gravel and cyclocross race shoes feature microfiber leather with new perforations for enhanced fit, comfort and breathability.
For more durability in the impact-prone toe area, Shimano says the XC9s have a reinforced toe bumper and additional armor expanding from the midfoot zone.
Lastly, the electric green color is new, to go along with the classic Shimano blue and black options.
Shimano did carry over many of its race-ready features on the latest XC9 shoes, like the Dynalast outsole, low stack height and one-piece upper.
BOA's IP1 dials continue on for micro-adjustability and Michelin rubber comprises the lugs for low-weight traction.

SH-ME701 highlights
Like the S-Phyre XC9 shoes, the ME7s received the new perforated synthetic leather, which is claimed to improve the fit and breathability. Shimano has eliminated the mesh panels used on its previous ME7 shoes.
A new low-profile buckle is said to be better tucked out of harm's way. The shoe's armor has been revised as well, for added protection with better durability.
And to keep feet dry, Shimano has included a sealed cleat area to keep moisture out of the shoe.
There are new sizes, too. Shimano's Volume+ last is stated to work well with an ultra-wide range of feet, from sizes 38-50.
A bunch of key features remain on the ME7s. Shimano's Torbal tech is still on board, which lets the rear of the shoe flex torsionally. The stretchy neoprene ankle collar remains to keep rocks, sand and other trail litter out.
Below the new buckle, lacing can still be found, which Shimano claims provides a secure fit while adapting to varying foot sizes and shapes.
And for the lugs, it's still Michelin providing a dual-density rubber for off-bike traction.
