SRAM has overhauled its Rise 60 cross-country wheelset, adding a 27.5in option, increasing the internal width, and incorporating a new hookless carbon rim design.
While many of the updates to the Rise 60 are already present in SRAM’s wheel line, the Rise 60 leads the way with a new tubeless-ready, hookless bead design. Hookless beads and carbon construction complement each other well; hookless rim profiles can offer superior impact protection, while also being easier to manufacture. The new hookless carbon rim design gains two millimeters in internal width over the previous Rise 60 rim, widening 21mm.
Other features incorporated into the new Rise 60 wheelset are carried over from the company’s burlier Roam and Rail wheels. The Solo Spoke design, which uses one spoke length for the front, rear, right and left sides makes spoke replacement a breeze. The Rise 60 freehub now incorporate SRAM’s Double Time ratchet system, which uses two pairs of pawls offset around a 26-tooth ratchet ring. One pair of pawls is in contact with the ratchet ring at a time, resulting in 52 points of contact and 6.9 degrees of engagement.
The Rise 60 front hub is available in two versions: a 15mm thru-axle version that is also compatible with a 9mm quick-release and a dedicated predictive steering version to accompany the new RockShox RS-1 suspension fork.
The rear hub is convertible between 142x12mm thru-axle and 135x10mm quick-release. The Rise 60 rear freehub can be converted between a Shimano-compatible version as well as SRAM’s XD driver body for 1x11 drivetrains.
The both the front and rear hubs use symmetrical endcaps, so there’s no need to worry about which adapter goes on which side (save for the dedicated Predictive Steering version.)
Claimed weight for the 27.5in wheelset is 1,390g. The 29in version has a claimed weight of 1,430g.
Last but not least, Rise 60 wheelsets will come with six decal kits, allowing riders to color coordinate their wheels with their frames.
RISE 60 pricing and availability
Front Rise 60 wheels in 27.5in and 29in will retail for US$950, £722, €844, (AU pricing TBA). The Predictive Steering version for the RockShox RS-1 (currently only available for 29ers) will retail for US$990, £752, €880 (AU pricing TBA).
Rear Rise 60 wheels in 27.5in and 29in will retail for US$1040, £790, €924, (AU pricing TBA).
The 29in versions of the Rise 60 will be available in November. The 27.5in version will follow in January 2015.
