Mobile network provider EE has today introduced a new action camera with live video streaming capability. The device features built-in 4G connectivity, meaning it’s possible to stream video live to social networks without any further hardware.
EE aims to trump GoPro by addressing the frustrations of many users that simply want to shoot and share as they can on their smartphones. Much of this live broadcasting functionality is down to a new app funded by EE known as Skeegle. It’s similar to the likes of Meerkat, and Periscope in that it's a platform to broadcast live streams, yet it sets itself aside with unique privacy options – meaning you get to totally control who sees your broadcasts.
The camera itself is capable of recording full 1080p HD video at 30 frames per second, or 720p clips at 30/60fps. Live streaming over the 4G connection is possible only at 30fps in 720p. The device can also take 13 megapixel stills and can shoot in a burst mode at 8fps. Other technical highlights include a removable waterproof case that is rated to 60m into the drink, a claimed three hour battery life and space for a microSD card to add up to 64gb of memory.
Crucially, the body of the action camera is so similar to that of a GoPro that it remains compatible with a huge array of existing accessories
The device is sold with a matching watch that can be used as a viewfinder to frame images or video and can be used to control the device remotely. Similarly, there’s an app which means your Android mobile or iPhone can control the same functions.
EE’s network, which is best known for its early adoption of the 4G platform, is offering the device with both pay monthly or pay as you go plans. Prices start at £10 per month with a £100 up-front payment for existing EE customers.
GoPro, the market leader in action cameras is yet to offer a device that can match the EE cam’s streaming capability, at least not without the use of external apps and a mobile phone or without extremely expensive hardware.
As well as going after the action sports market, EE has pitched the camera at homeowners as a security solution, as well as to motorists and even businesses.
The 4GEE Action Cam will be available inEE stores from 16 June, as well as selected high street stores and online retailers.
