It’s not even April, but it appears that ‘cross is already coming. Trek has just released details of a redesigned Crockett. This alloy cyclocross bike has been updated with thru-axles at both ends and some clever singlespeed sliders.

To be fair, this bike isn’t new news. Trek teased it to the public during the Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships, in Portland, Oregon, in December. Sven Nys made a surprise appearance at the race with a yet-to-be released cyclocross bike.
Also to be fair, a lot of folks, myself included, stumbled away from that event with muddy bikes and blurry memories of what occurred, so here’s a look at the custom-painted Crockett Sven Nys raced at SSCXWC and a glimpse of the organized chaos that went down in Portland.
Back to this bike: the Crockett’s geometry remains largely the same as the previous version. The big news for short riders is the addition an extra-small, size 47cm frameset, which brings the total number of frame sizes up to seven.
The majority of the Crockett revisions keep the frame on pace with the rest of the market. The new frame is disc-only and uses the road direct-mount standard. There are thru-axles at both ends — 100x12mm at the front and 142x12mm in the rear.
Trek borrowed some tech from its mountain bike line to include the Stranglehold chain tensioning system, so riders can easily turn the Crockett into a singlespeed, or extend the rear-center for a bit more stability when used as a gravel bike.
I tested the Stranglehold thru-axle system on the Trek Superfly SS and was very impressed with their reliability and ease of adjustment.
Crockett builds and pricing
Trek is launching the Crockett in two complete bikes as well as a frameset.
The top-end Crockett 7 Disc has a SRAM Force 1 drivetrain and comes with tubeless wheels and tires.

The Crockett 5 Disc looks like a great value for weekend warriors or those getting started in the sport. It has a SRAM Rival 1 drivetrain with Tektro Spyre mechanical disc brakes. It also comes race-ready with tubeless wheels and tires.

Last but not least, Trek is offering the Crockett Disc as a frameset with its ISO Speed carbon fork.
