Graeme Obree’s attempt to break the world human-powered speed record has received a welcome boost through a sponsorship deal with travel search site Skyscanner.
The Flying Scotsman had been expected to take a tilt at the current benchmark of 82.819mph (133.28km/h) at the World Human Powered Speed Challenge in Battle Mountain, Nevada last week, but issues with fine-tuning his bike caused a postponement.
He took the delay in his stride and now set his sights on going for the record on home soil; a bike “designed in Britain, made in Britain and broken in Britain”, as he puts it.
No date or venue has been confirmed but Obree is adamant it will take place this year before the winter sets in, most likely on an airport runway somewhere in Britain.
“It’s great to have Skyscanner’s support for the land speed record attempt,” said Obree. “As a team, we are all very excited about the chance to push the time barrier back. While the bottom line is the record itself, the fact that we are really pushing the creative and mechanical mind to produce a bike that can take the record is almost more important.”
