Four panniers aren’t always enough to stow kit when you’re embarking on longer tours and roll top bags, cinched on the rear rack, are ideal for overflow. This model – from waterproof meister Ortlieb – is available in three sizes and is made from a light yet tough, scuff-resistant material that survived a gruelling tour in India without a blemish.
There’s a slider for easy closure, although you’ll need to roll it several times to ensure complete waterproofing, and there’s also a valve to compress it right down. Our only niggle is with the bag’s closure clip, which had a tendency to spring undone when carrying the bag over your shoulder.
