The Utah’s sturdy, sculpted, aluminium channel is quite short but accepts most tyres. The fittings holding it to the roof bars are more agricultural, the front fixing through a plastic bracket that also holds the supporting arm. The arm and channel are strong, but the plastic base allows some sideways movement.
The arm differs from similar designs by clamping to a raised crank arm, not the down-tube. This uses the stationary wheel to prevent movement, and saves damaging paintwork or delicate tubes. The clamp is lockable, but it’s a tight fit between an average diameter down-tube and closely-spaced cranks.
