Usefully powerful light packed with really neat practical details at a great price

MTB Batteries started off supplying replacement batteries for other brands. It’s used that experience to make an impressive range of its own lights, and its new Lumen 2200 the most powerful yet.

The miniature binocular design houses twin LEDs that give a decent peripheral to keep you aware of current riding context and corners and a reasonable column of light down the trail. There are no obvious hot or dark spots in the beam, which keeps eyes fresher and perception less compromised as the night drags on.

The four power levels are controlled by a domed remote switch for easy control without letting go of the grip. There’s a three-LED 100 percent / 50 percent / 10 percent battery life traffic light on the back of the head, although the generous battery capacity means run time is unlikely to be an issue unless you join the straight-through crew.

Other practical touches include an anti-slip strap on the wrapover battery bag to increase stability and security. Even the luminous O-ring bands for the bar mount are useful if you drop them when fumbling to fit or remove your light in a dark car park.
