Quality front light at a surprisingly low price

The new RSP light range from Raleigh aims to combine high performance for value for money, and with the Asteri 3 they’ve certainly succeeded.

This compact, alloy-bodied unit combines a 3W LED with a Li-ion rechargeable battery to give a claimed output of up to 200 lumens. Because the battery is integrated in the body, there are no cables to get in the way.

It attaches to the handlebar with a solid quick-release mount and is operated via an easy-to-reach button on the top. Charging is via the included smart charger, and we found the battery lasted almost seven hours on full power before the red warning light came on.

The light is plenty bright enough for road riding and fine, although not earth-shatteringly bright, on unlit stretches at commuting speeds. For faster riding, we used it in conjunction with a second light, with the Asteri trained just ahead of our front wheel and the brighter spot aimed further ahead. Flashing and low-power modes are useful for road use.

There are a few downsides – visibility from the side isn’t great and the rubber plug sealing the recharge point has a tendency to fall out – but overall this is a great little unit at a very reasonable price.
