Just under 2.5kg and £50 for portable, tough security

If you're in the market for something more adaptable than a D-lock, this combination is well worth looking into.

The 10mm hardened steel chain is available in 0.8m, 1m, 1.5m and 2m lengths, and our 0.8m test sample tipped the scales at an impressive 2.12kg.

The internal width of the links is 15mm, so if you buy the chain alone it pays to make sure your padlock shackle will accept a 10mm diameter chain with a 15mm internal gap.

We tested the Masterlock M50D, but this chain will also accept the Squire SS50CS, or Secure-A-Bike padlocks also available from Torc-Anchors.com.

The M50D padlock weighs a scant 372g yet offers good protection. We managed to open it once under controlled situations, but it took the best part of 40 minutes.

Cutting is quicker – using our portable grinder it took 2min 17sec for the padlock and an impressive 3min 57sec for the chain.
