If the science is to be believed, this really is one for racers to consider

Slightly different to traditional cycling energy drinks, Beet It Sport is a shot of beetroot juice and concentrated lemon juice that you take one to 12 hours before exercise.

  • Pros: Potential performance benefit
  • Cons: Taste and cost

The 70ml shot contains 15g of carbohydrate and 71kcal, but the nitrate content of the drink is said to aid performance as nitric oxides reduce the oxygen cost of exercise.

Our testers unanimously agreed that the taste was unpleasant, but one tester did perform relatively well in a race after drinking some. It is worth reading a little about the science behind nitrates, as they seem to be finding their way into more energy products. For serious racers, the taste might be something worth putting up with.

They're sold in packs of 15 x 70 mL for £27.
