Great picture quality and useful functions, but not as burly as they claim

Taking a digital camera on a ride to record your antics with your mates is a great idea, but cameras are notoriously fragile and susceptible to the elements. Is the Olympus 1050SW the answer?

The 1050SW is waterproof to three metres, so will withstand any rain shower or puddle dunking, and it’s also claimed to be shock-proof.

The 10.1 megapixel camera gives a great, clear image, but lacks an optical zoom, so long-distance shots are out of the question.

A great feature for the mountain biker is the high-speed shutter function, which takes 5.4 shots per second, up to 24 shots, meaning you never miss the action.

Our issue with the camera was the shock-proof claim. We managed to break both of our samples using Olympus's 1.5m drop test onto a concrete floor. This is a harsh test, though, and more than it would experience if you had a crash with it in your backpack.
