UK brand Montane have long been producers of some of our favourite waterproof jackets, and the Atomic Stretch, although not bike-specific, looks at carrying on their fine heritage.
Montane atomic stretch jacket – first look
The cut is really good – the body and arms are fitted but there is still room for layers underneath and the lower-cut hem helps keep water out of your shorts. The Nylon Pertex Shield Stretch fabric repels water and wind brilliantly and offers plenty of movement, but is still tough enough to ward off scrapes and crashes.
We also like the two large vents in the side pockets, and the fact you can roll the wired hood down for those wind-choking descents. One of our favourite features, however, is how quickly the jacket dries – the Pertex has it back to bone dry in what feels like a ridiculously short time, and even after several washes the waterproofing hasn’t diminished at all.
The Atomic holds its own off the bike too, making it a great all-rounder. It comes with a compression sack that allows it to pack down to the size of a generous satsuma.
