Commencal MX Race review

The Commencal MX Race is a hefty pair of shorts, but they're surprisingly flexible to ride in thanks to the effective use of stretch panels. They're clean in terms of pockets (there's one hand-warmer style zipped pocket) and too much fancy detail, so it's clear you're paying for bombproof durability.

Substantial and versatile shorts for serious money

The Commencal MX Race is a hefty pair of shorts, but they're surprisingly flexible to ride in thanks to the effective use of stretch panels.

They're clean in terms of pockets (there's one hand-warmer style zipped pocket) and too much fancy detail, so it's clear you're paying for bombproof durability. They're shaped high at the back and feature gripper elastic inside the centre of the waist, so they stay put. A chunky zip fly and flap, plus ratchet fastening, emphasise the solid feel and the system is very easy to use. We wouldn't wear these all day on the trail, but if you spend the majority of your time heading downhill fast covered in armour, they're worth considering. Then re-mortgage the house.
