Sizing is on the large side with these functional but costly shorts

Some sensible design features are evident in Oakley's new Ballistic. Thigh pockets are welded to eliminate stitching chafe, the rear pocket zip is cunningly concealed in the yoke seam and the removable liner shorts have grippers on both the inside and outside of the waistband to help keep the outers anchored.

Suspension is taken care of by a secure double press stud and zipped fly, with belt loops if you need further adjustment. Plenty of stretch helps keep the fit spot on, although they are somewhat oversized.

The endless hokey-cokey of zipped vents is eliminated by a mesh panel that runs the full length of both legs and crosses the crotch right where airflow is most appreciated in sweltering weather.

The only sticking point is the price: if you shop around you’ll probably find the Ballistics selling at a discount but, against such competition, the price tag of £90 is hard to swallow.
