Our review

Stealth styling and high performance is always a great combination in waterproof shorts

These shorts are another example of the triumph that is simplicity of styling combined with an exemplary cut. There’s not a bell or a whistle to be found but the quiet use of triangular stretch inserts at the waist – cut forwards so they follow the way you move – does more for your riding comfort than many a more complex feature.

You’ll gather that we liked these a lot – stretch inserts feature in the back yoke and down the backs of the legs too and together with the easy but not voluminous shape they feel as close as you’re likely to get to everyday riding shorts. The leg width is cinched in, not at the hem as is more usual, but via a cord that runs through a channel in the lining a couple of inches higher. What that does is pull the lining in closer to make them seal and reduce potential flap without affecting the outer.

For the simple reason that the Helium doesn’t transform you into clown legs, these shorts are probably worth the investment. The other reason is the Gore-Tex Paclite fabric, which is solidly waterproof and very breathable.
