Too hot for long rides, but great for added coverage when the weather gets nasty

Gore’s new Fusion 2.0 trousers can be worn as shorts too, thanks to a well-positioned zipper on each leg that removes the lower section of the trousers. That makes them a versatile clothing option – albeit one that’s a tad pricey.

As trousers, they’ve proved to be too hot for long days of riding, but the option to increase coverage as the weather changes is useful, especially if you use your bike for commuting too.

The softshell Windstopper fabric is both comfortable and resilient to the elements, doing a great job of keeping the wind at bay while providing a good level of water repellency too. While the Fusion 2.0s aren’t fully waterproof, water tends to bead on the surface instead of soaking in, and breathability is excellent.

The fit, construction quality and waist adjustment allow for a healthy amount of movement, though the tailored cut around the upper legs is tighter than on regular ‘trail shorts’, resulting in a slightly odd look when we wore them with kneepads.
