Teak-tough and versatile – though expensive – bruiser

The sturdy I-Beam arms and spider of this evergreen all-rounder crankset are forged in one piece, then machined and laser etched on the outer faces. The steel axle needs muscle to fit, but the fixed non-drive arm means less hassle getting it past chain devices.

It’ll handle any ring combo you want, and the inner ring stubs use a circular spacer, removing clearance issues if you decide to single-ring it. Race Face bottom bracket life is good these days too and, though there’s no BB30 option, Race Face does sell an adaptor.

The 38/24t chainring leap is larger than normal but the criss-cross machining with steel ‘helper’ rivets manages it fine. The arms and rings are impressively tough and stiff too. It costs considerably more than the obvious Shimano XT competition though.
