Hope Boxxer top crown + stem review
It seems those Barnoldswick-based masters of metal machining, Hope Technology, have had the CNC machine on overtime. They’ve released a pair of beautifully intricate one-piece crowns and stems to suit Fox 40 and 2010 RockShox Boxxer forks.
Our Boxxer version weighs 265g – 120g lighter than the standard crown and Gravity direct mount stem we swapped out. Obviously, losing four bolts to mount a separate stem saves weight, but Hope have really gone to town too.
Not only is every ounce of excess material machined away, they also spec titanium bolts as standard. Putting it together is very simple, and a joy to do, with the precision fit smoothly gliding onto the steerer and stanchions of our fork.
The current trend in downhill racing is for super-low bars, to lower the centre of gravity for maximum corner speed. Hope have certainly picked up on this – this thing is slammed!
The centre of the bar clamp is just level with the top of the crown giving us a drop of about 30mm over our Gravity stem, which is a fairly typical direct mount unit.
There is zero flex evident. Even yanking on the end of a super-wide downhill bar, this thing is solid, transferring to direct directional control.
