We used to see a lot of Kore stuff when they had OE (original equipment) spec on GT bikes, since then they've been a bit off the radar. So when the new Kore Elite stem hit our doormat we were pleased to see the return of the brand.
At 134g (for our 100mm model) the new 2014 alloy stem is on the cusp of being top flight XC race material (we expect 125g for that). Available in 80/90/100/110/120/130mm lengths with a shallow five degree rise they're the ideal shape to get a low, race-friendly position when all you want to see is the trail and the finish line, rather than the surrounding views.
The stem clamps to the steerer with a single 6mm Allen bolt. The fully removable face plate uses an interlocking upper knuckle and twin 4mm pinch bolts to secure the 31.8mm diameter clamp. Despite looking a bit too simple to really work, the knuckle closure holds firm and doesn't make any creaking noises. The stem is plenty stiff enough to cope with wide handlebar out of the saddle climbs and we've not had any case for complaint yet.
