Gamut's downhill-orientated Podium flats have an alloy body, a steel axle and run on four sealed cartridge bearings. At 300g a pair, they stand up to the maker’s claims of being some of the lightest out there.
On paper the Podiums should be a winner with their low weight, concave profile and nine removable pins per side, but the reality is a little different. The long pins do offer good grip but the bearing housing that sits next to the crank arm pushes your foot out towards the edge of the pedal.
This reduces the usable area of the 100x100mm platform considerably and leaves part of your foot on the chamfered outside edge, where it naturally rolls outwards, compromising stability and confidence. If your feet are bigger than our tester’s UK size 8.5 (42), this is only going to be more pronounced.
The alloy pins succumbed to rock strikes with little resistance too.
Gamut is now shipping the pedals with heat-treated pins and says this has sorted the problem. The axles and pedal bodies have held up well, but despite their light weight, the Podiums don’t trump our go-to flats. We’d happily take a few extra grams in return for a bigger platform that would give more stability.
