The Black ONEs are simple-looking flat pedals with 10 pins per side (20 in total per pedal) that are replaceable and adjustable, sealed cartridge bearings, a concave profile and a 100x100mm platform. My samples weighed a slender 310g for the pair — a meagre gram over their claimed weight.
While the large number of aggressive pins provides plenty of grip, the platform isn’t quite as big as on the likes of the CrankBrothers Stamp.
On the trail, this is only really noticeable if you dab your feet a lot in turns, where a bigger platform makes life that bit easier.
When it comes to durability, the Black ONEs have resisted rock strikes fairly well and the pins haven’t wriggled loose.
The bearing and sealing system leaves a little to be desired, though. After only a few rides in the wet (and some negligent maintenance), the bearings became squeaky and felt rough when spun by hand.
A regrease brought the pedals back to life, but the speed at which their performance degraded highlights a sealing or bearing issue that needs to be rectified. I’d expect such pricey pedals (€120) to resist at least a month of use without maintenance.
