DT Swiss has always prioritised low weight, pedal friendly shocks – and the new X313 is true to form.
The distinctively rounded body makes it an easy fit into most bikes, and articulated joints at either end remove side loading stress. The deeply embedded rebound adjust dial is slightly awkward to reach but the clicks are clear to feel. The low speed compression damping lever is angled outwards for easy finding when you’re flicking between locked, drive or open modes in a hurry.
It’s hollow to save weight too, making the X313 a definite diet option for your bike. There’s even a carbon sleeved and levered version if you want to save another 50g and don’t mind paying for the privilege. There’s a remote handlebar compression lever option of the X313 too, plus a budget open/locked X212 option.
Either way, the lockout is a properly solid setting that’ll only budge under extreme provocation. The ‘Drive’ setting is definitely at the firm end of the spectrum too, with a clean feel through the pedals and plenty of cornering support at the expense of noticeable chatter and chop over small bumps.
Add the low weight, plus a limited range of sizes that top out at 200mm long and it’s definitely oriented to shorter travel, XC/trail bikes. The fully open setting is still usefully composed and controlled though, with a naturally very progressive spring rate that means you can run low start pressures to overcome an otherwise slightly stubborn start compared with the most sensitive shocks.
It can also choke and spike occasionally if you’re really start slapping it through successive square edged hits or random rocky terrain. If you think of it more as a partner to a Revelation, 32 or DT Swiss fork rather than a Pike or 36 you’ll be OK though – and that matches the weight saving ethic and sizing too.
