We’re fans of the extra long Arione by Italian seat gurus Fi’zi:k. The increased hull length enables you to ease back on the saddle on seated climbs and really get your back and quads levering on the pedals, and the long nose gives you something to grip with your knees when you’re stood on the pedals jetting the bike through sweeping single track sections.
The saddle’s had a technology update and now sports a carbon fibre hull with tubular titanium rails bonded into it, bringing the weight down to a paltry 200g. Also new is a cut-away section of hull running almost the entire length to help you sit ‘into’ it rather than just on it. The Arione still features the Fi’zi:k Wing Flex design that enables the flanks to move with your thighs, and it does work.
We loved the original Arione and the new version is a genuine improvement in comfort and weight. If you can take the look (we rather like its long, sleek lines) and the massive price tag, then you’ll be in for a pleasant ride.
