The Tundra 2 saddle by Fizik is conceptually a competition-level, cross-country perch but with enough versatility to be used all day if needs be. We had issues with the original Tundra: the hull was a bit too well supported and the padding a bit thin and lifeless, leaving us numb far too soon.
We’ve tested the latest 180g carbon rail model and the identical looking – and performing – marginally heavier (though still very light) 200g Kium alloy rail model. We’re happy to report that a revised shape and increased padding depth have made a big difference. The feel is softer and more supportive.
For those who value form with function, the Tundra 2 is still one of the sleekest looking saddles on the market. Fizik debut their new bonded upper for stitch-free seams – a nice touch but it doesn’t make any noticeable difference to the feel.
But back to the tech: the hull has been tweaked to allow more flex and sag for a more compliant ride feel. We didn’t like the old Tundra on hardtails for its pew-like feel, whereas we’re happy riding the Tundra 2 without rear suspension. It’s still a firm, sports-orientated ride, so if you’re after an armchair feel you’d be better off on Fizik’s Gobi or Aliante models.
The Tundra is easy to shift your weight around on and slide off the back, but we’d love a version with 5-10mm more width over the existing narrow 127mm tail (much like Specialized do a range of widths with their Body Geometry saddles) in order to cater for riders with wider spaced sit bones. But it’s comfy to ride whether in straight Lycra, baggy bike shorts or even casual non-bike shorts. Prices look set to follow the 2010 prices of the original model.
