Danish lightweight specialists New Ultimate use two bolts securing spindly top clamps to hold saddle rails into a basic semi-cylinder base. Although good for saving weight, this clamp arrangement doesn’t support lightweight rails and the company recommend against use with carbon-railed saddles.

The separate top clamps are also tricky to get into position and become misaligned when you adjust the saddle fore and aft through the small range available. Despite the waif-like build and 90kg rider weight limit, the New Ultimate post doesn’t flex to absorb vibration so impacts have a direct line to your backside.
