A great hard-pack tyre but not the strongest in the mud

ITS’s old System 4s were a great all-round package. Recently though, they’ve had a revamp and been brought bang up to date. The biggest change is the new Low Specific Gravity (LSG) casing, which Intense claim reduces weight by 18 percent, while also making the tyre compatible with modern sealants.

It quickly becomes apparent that the System 4s are at their happiest on hard-packed, fast-rolling trails. The tyres’ squared profile alongside the C3 compound enables the side-knobs to support you well in turns, while the shallower centre section keeps you bombing along nicely on the straights.

As a result, they climb pretty well too, with those sidewalls offering a decent level of purchase when the going gets a bit more technical. One criticism of the System4 is that the tightly packed tread pattern does clog up easily, particularly when you’re in the tacky stuff. But if you don’t see loads of mud, then we’d highly recommend the System 4s.
