Mavic CrossMax XL review

Mavic CrossMax XL review

The CrossMax XL wheelset has been around for several years and it's still great. Mavic's unique sealed-bed rims mean you can run UST tubeless or normal tyres without adaptors and they're very tough.

Our review
Light but strong performance and great looks; on the expensive side

The CrossMax XL wheelset has been around for several years and it's still great. Mavic's unique sealed-bed rims mean you can run UST tubeless or normal tyres without adaptors and they're very tough, but they're disc only and the tyre fit can be tight. Twenty four fat zicral alloy spokes give cartoonish looks, but they're far tougher than you'd expect.

The slotted, fat-bodied hubs keep the weight way down; the front bearings need replacing occasionally and it's best to thread lock the 20mm axle spacers in, but if you service the rear hub regularly, it's sorted. The low weight of this set makes it a super agile XC/freeride choice, but the high price reflects that.
