Mavic Deetraks Wheelset

Our review

A good, honest gravity wheelset that doesn’t threaten to break the scales

Mavic’s all-new Deetraks are their entry level model in the ‘extreme mountain bike’ range and follow in the shadow of the almighty Deemax.

Although officially labelled a ‘freeride’ wheelset, the Deetraks are more than man enough to tackle downhill duties and given that they’re nearly half of the price of their big brothers, they’re a lot more attainable too.

At the heart of the wheels is a pair of 32-hole Mavic QRM+ adjustable bearing hubs. The rear is available in both 135mm quick-release and 150mm x 12mm through-axle widths. The front is 20mm with quick-release adapters also available.

The ultra-wide 31mm rims are single eyelet jobs, the lower price tag also negating UST compatibility. Holding everything together are Mavic’s own steel spokes fastening into brass nipples. All this adds up to a not particularly heavy 2,255g for the pair.

On the bike, the Deetraks feel taut and stiff. The engagement is quick and clean thanks to the patented ITS4 4-pawl engagement system.

Where they excel though is in the strength stakes – they’re super-tough and can take a real pounding when out on the trail. Make no mistake, these are true fit-and-forget wheels.

Forget all the ‘bling’ of Deemax, because there are no bells and whistles with the Deetraks – just a super-strong, hard-working pair of wheels that represent excellent value for money.
