These wheels turn in a decent performance for the cash you’re splashing. The Mach 1 Freeride rim is wide enough to handle up to 2.4in tyres, has proved hard to dent and stayed straight throughout testing despite repeated pinch flats on rocky descents.
The Shimano Deore hubs are quick-release only, but there is a 15mm axle version of the wheelset available. You’ll need to look after the cup-and-cone bearings in heavy weather though – we temporarily seized the rears in just a few weeks last winter.
The tension and build quality of the 36 single-butted Mach 1 spokes is impressive for the money. Weight is 2,458g (1,132g front, 1,326g rear).
