Lightweight, smooth, and strong – although they could have been truer

The Jetflys from Taiwanese brand Novatec are light wheels and they ride like it, rushing up to speed fast when you want to put the hammer down.

The sealed bearing hubs are incredibly silky, while the 33mm deep rims hardly budge off centre, even when you really throw the bike around.

They were only mid-pack in terms of both vertical and lateral truth when we got them, but they didn’t alter at all as we racked up the winter miles.

They’re well built with perfect tension, using 20 double-butted spokes up front, radially laced, and 24 at the rear: eight radial on the non-drive side, 16 three-cross on the drive side.

Spoke tension up front deteriorated quite a bit over time but happily there was no change at the back. Add in the tidily machined rim sidewalls and the superior, classy looks and you’ve got some remarkable wheels for the price. And they make a great freewheel noise too.
