You get what you pay for, and these are fast, stable and bombproof

Following the success of its 303 Firecrest CCL Disc wheels, Zipp’s 202 wheelset is a tough, versatile all-rounder. It's only offered only as a clincher, and is aimed at riders who want high quality disc brake wheels with well proven rims and the convenience of clincher tyres.

  • Highs: Strong, stable, versatile, quality
  • Lows: They don’t need that braking track

The rims – 25.4mm wide and 32mm deep – are shared with the current rim-brake 202 and retain the braking track, but with 24 spokes front and rear, the accepted minimum for a disc brake wheel.

Zipp’s 88 front and 188 rear hubs include 17mm axles, Swiss-made steel bearings that Zipp claims are the roundest in the industry, and six-bolt IS rotor mounts. Longer (70mm) straight quick release levers give greater leverage, and help keep fingers clear of the rotors.

Without QRs (95g), rotors or rim tapes, our set weighed 1,546g, an increase of 135g over the non-disc brake set, mainly due to six extra front spokes and weightier hubs.

On the road, the 202’s proven stability and responsiveness is undimmed, the front feeling crisp when turning in, and acceleration lively. They suit 25mm or larger tyres, and on rolling terrain the low rotational mass makes them rapid ascenders, while their stability inspires descending and cornering confidence.

Knowing you have consistently reliable brakes beneath you removes any potential carbon braking issues – and keeps your rims looking immaculate – but we couldn’t help wondering how much faster they could be without the braking track.

Though the 202s will never be a cheap option, their versatility and reliability make them well equipped for everyday use on or occasionally off road, where the clincher design will limit low tyre pressures but they won’t be wanting for strength.
