Our review
A top-drawer lid with some seriously impressive venting and safety tech, but this doesn’t come cheap

Pros:

Great comfort from the thick padding; well-thought-out safety features; good ventilation

Cons:

Heavier than some of its competitors; the price is steep

At 1,220g (small) and £450 / $500, Fox’s top-of-the-line Rampage Pro Carbon downhill helmet isn’t the lightest or cheapest, but it is packed with safety features and feels reassuringly robust.

The 15 intake ports and five exhaust ports are covered with a hard mesh that allows air to flow through but prevents debris from entering. They do a decent job of keeping you cool too, which is impressive considering the protection on offer.

The fit is secure and comfy thanks to thick padding and a moisture-wicking X-Static liner. Even on my tiny head, the Rampage Pro Carbon sizes up quite small, so I’d recommend trying before buying (Fox does claim it will “break in” over time).

There are safety features galore, including liquid-filled Fluid Inside pods designed to protect against linear and rotational impact forces, a dual-density EPS liner and an injection-moulded chin bar.

The peak attaches via magnets so it can detach in a crash. It’s not adjustable, but never got in the way.

The D-loop closure bolsters security and adds to the overall well-protected feel you get when wearing the lid. If you’re into the looks and have deep pockets, it should do a decent job of keeping your head safe.
