It could be mistaken for a builder’s helmet, but this is actually the new trail lid from Italian company Limar. And don’t worry – it’s available in a myriad colours. Still, we rather liked this matte orange limited edition, and you’ll definitely be seen in it.
The universal size (55-61cm) won’t suit the smallest or biggest heads, but it does a good job for most, and the deeper rear section offers more coverage than the average cross-country or road lid.
The Limar is well specced for the price, and even includes a soft fleece wrap around the buckle. The indexed retention dial is adjustable with one hand, so on-the-fly tweaks are easy, and while the strap has some vertical adjustment the larger-than-most quick release button – integrated with the rear strap – is useful if a little clunky in use.
Still, it speeds up helmet removal if you’re the conscientious type who readjusts the headband every time you put your helmet on. The moulded-in mesh on the front vents does well in keeping bugs and bees at bay, and is a welcome detail at this price.
A longer than average peak works well as a sun blind/mud guard/ blinker so you don’t have to look at the hill ahead. It’s removable if you find it annoyingly in your eyeline, but this does little to improve the already aesthetically challenged looks.
