If you’re heading off on a tour to anywhere vaguely remote, being able to change a broken drive side spoke should be a part of your supplies checklist.
Normally you’d need a three-pronged attack to remove the cassette: a cassette locking tool, a spanner and a chainwhip. The Shimano-compatible Next Best Thing 2 does away with the need for these heavy tools by using the derailleur hanger as a leverage point.
Once anchored in place, which can be a little fiddly, it’s a matter of turning the pedals to loosen the lockring. As long as the lockring hasn’t been overtightened initially – best to check before setting off on tour – it’s a clever solution to every tourer’s nightmare.
