Our review
A simple, compact and cheaper alternative to a full-scale repair workstand

Pros:

Great for washing bikes, cleaning drivetrains or just displaying your pride and joy; easy to chuck in the boot of a car

Cons:

By its nature, the Hobo is no use for working on bottom brackets or jobs that require removing the front wheel or fork

Simply-made, from a section of formed steel tubing, the Hobo is a compact bike stand that’s ideal for car park repair jobs.

The triangular frame acts as a footing and a small length of narrower-gauge tubing slides into the hollow axle of your cranks to hold the rear wheel off the floor.

Three plastic spacers are supplied, corresponding to different axle diameters. These may need to be switched around if you want to work on multiple bikes, but it’s a 20-second job with an Allen key. The Hobo won’t work with cranksets that have no access to the inside of the axle, but these are uncommon.

Because the bike is only supported in one place, low down, it can wobble around slightly, but the stand is secure enough for tuning gears and the like, and there’s ample pedal clearance for this.

It’s no use for anything involving the front wheel though, which is required to hold the bike upright. At home, I’d still favour a conventional workstand, but where I’ve found the Hobo most useful is for washing bikes.

After a few months of use, the powder-coated finish is holding up well, but some rubberised feet wouldn’t go amiss to give it a more secure footing on hardstanding.
