A basic frame-mounted kit sounds useful, but an all-in-one multi-tool solution might be more convenient

What do you prefer, a multi-tool or lots of tiny tools? If you’re not too sure, you probably will be after you’ve tried Topeak’s Survival Gear Box.

It’s effectively an exercise in taking all the component parts of a decent multi-tool and fitting them in a multi-tool sized box.

This is a nice idea if you like your tools to come in boxes, and we can’t deny that it’s a nice little box with a secure catch, but we found the tools as fiddly to extract and use as those on an average multi-tool so the only bonus here is that you get a puncture kit as well.

You also get 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6mm Allen keys, 8, 9 and 10mm spanners plus flat, Phillips and Torx heads, a basic chain tool and two tyre levers.

Like most Topeak products, quality is reasonable and some riders will like the fact that you can strap the box to your frame.

But tester consensus was that a good multi-tool would do the job just as well, and Topeak can offer you an assortment of the best multi-tools on the market. We’d say buy one of those and get a puncture kit separately.
