This is essentially a car sat-nav system and speed camera detector with on-screen Ordnance Survey mapping. However it has limited navigation options and battery life and the touch-screen is questionable for off-road use. Worth considering if you want to navigate shorter rides and use the same device to get you there.
This is something a bit different: a speed camera alert system with full postcode search and turn-by-turn GPS sat-nav. That’s not all, as it also includes the ability to display OS Memory Maps in full colour and detail, although it’s not Mac compatible.
As a sat-nav/alert system it’s already highly regarded, using its colour-coded screens and Road Angel’s blackspot and camera alert system to remind those incapable of just slowing the heck down where they will get busted for being leadfoots.
It includes European major routes as standard, and the Memory Map of your choice can be added directly on SD cards (Memory Map software from £50).
The unit is waterproof and fairly lightweight, with a readable 3.5in colour screen with built-in anti-glare. It also has the latest generation SiRF-III GPS receiver, and works as an MP3 player and photo viewer, too – although the PDA-style pen and stylus touchscreen is a durability concern for off-road use.
The bike mount (extra £19.95) seems an afterthought – it’s bulky, cheap-looking and limited to standard 25.4mm bar mounting.
With a 4-6 hour battery life and no battery back-up, you won’t want to stray too far from the car park.
