Minoura VFS-G

Our review

Great range of resistance and brilliantly easy to set up (once it's built!)

Minoura has apparently made the VFS-G frame deliberately more flexible to better simulate out-of-the-saddle riding. And it works, too, as soon as you’ve convinced yourself that the bike’s not going to fall off!

The trainer comes in plenty of bits and takes a while to put together, but once it’s complete, fitting the bike couldn’t be easier: the gravity frame assures the correct tyre contact without any need for adjustment. The fluid/magnetic resistance unit has seven settings via an oversize-friendly bar control, and a maximum resistance of nearly 600W, more than enough to give that flexible frame a good workout on a climb session.

Minoura also throws in a Cateye Astrale 8 computer with rear wheel and cadence sensors, so you can keep track of your workout. The fluid unit has a resistance curve that increases exponentially with speed to simulate a headwind, and the 1.5kg flywheel makes the VFS-G smooth even on high settings. This is a quiet, classy unit, well able to cope with varied training scenarios, and the automatic contact adjustment makes it an excellent choice if you want to use more than one bike.
