Italian twosome in De Panne 1

PIC © TIM DE WAELE Luca Paolini (Liquigas) took his first victory for 2007 by beating fellow Italian Alessandro Ballan to win the first stage of the Three Days of De Panne. Ballan had attacked a seven man lead group with just over six kilometres to go, before Paolini bridged across to him and proved to be the best at the finish. In third place was Quick.Step's Kevin Hulsmans, who came in 11 seconds down. "This win is an injection of confidence for me, especially looking to the next race, Flanders," said Paolini. "After San Remo, I was worried about my condition, after a flu virus. "The dedication of this victory is for my friend Roberto [Locatelli, a MotoGP rider who crashed a few days ago], together with my affectionate wishes for a rapid return to health." From start to finish The first stage started in Middelkerke in windy and wet conditions with 182 riders. The bad weather resulted in a number of punctures and crashes in the first hour, with Bogdan Bondariew (Intel Action) becoming the first rider to abandon after 32km. After 45km, the first attack came from Mark Cavendish (T-Mobile), Jan Kuyckx (Landbouwkrediet), Steven Caethoven (Chocolade Jacques) and Raul Garcia (Saunier Duval). The group didn't last for long, but it marked the start of the real hostilities in the stage. The pace lifted in the second hour, splitting the bunch into three groups and leading to more crashes. Finally, after 86 km, Kuyckx was able to get away on the Edelareberg, the first climb of the day. The Belgian increased his advantage from 25 seconds at the top to almost two minutes by the time he hit the Berendries after 100km. He tackled the next few climbs on his own, until Stijn Devolder (Discovery) and Enrico Franzoi (Lampre) started to chase him. Kuyckx reached the finish line in Zottegem (km 118) with 44 seconds on Devolder and Franzoi, and 1'20 on the peloton. On the first of two 37km finishing circuits, Frdric Amorison, Evert Verbist, Mario Ickx, Gert Steegmans and Aleksandr Kuschynski were able to get across to Devolder and Franzoi. With 56km left, the seven were 1'00 behind the lone leader, and 24 seconds ahead of the bunch. 10km later it was over for Kuyckx, although he had secured the climbers jersey - possibly for the whole race. The peloton reformed with 44km to go, prompting a new move by Sergey Matveyev (Panaria) and Frederik Willems (Liquigas). The pair reached the second passage of the finish line in Zottegem with 16 seconds over the bunch, where the big names such as Tom Boonen, Peter Van Petegem and Leif Hoste were all comfortably sitting at the back. At the start of the second lap, Joost Posthuma (Rabobank) led a group away in pursuit of the two in front, including Alessandro Ballan (Lampre), Kevin Hulsmans (Quick.Step), Luca Paolini (Liquigas), Markus Eichler (Unibet.com), Bert Roesems (Predictor-Lotto), Frederic Guesdon (Franaise des Jeux), Benot Joachim (Astana) and David Boucher (Landbouwkrediet). They quickly caught Matveyev and Willems, forming a dangerous breakaway in front. In the meantime, Niko Eeckhout (Chocolade Jacques) crashed into a roadside obstacle, destroying his frame and putting him out of contention for the victory. He was able to finish the stage, albeit slowly. Discovery Channel had missed the move and tried to control the gap as the race reached the 2km of cobbles that marked the Haaghoek. But the leaders were working well, and even a massive turn by David Millar (Saunier Duval) did little to bring the bunch back. On the Leberg with 20km to go, the break reduced to just Paolini, Ballan, Hulsmans, Matveyev, Roesems, Posthuma and Eichler. They had half a minute, and increased this to 40 seconds on the downhill run into the Berendries. Tomas Vaitkus made a last ditch effort to get Discovery Channel back into the race on the Berendries, and succeeded in creating a chasing group with teammate Vladimir Gusev, Daniele Bennati (Lampre), Janek Tombak (Jartazi), Arnaud Coyot (Unibet.com), Gert Steegmans and Sbastien Rosseler (Quick.Step), Roy Sentjens (Predictor-Lotto), Manuel Quinziato (Liquigas), Serguei Ivanov and Gregory Rast (Astana). This larger group closed the gap to the leaders to 22 seconds with 10km left, but there were too many riders present with teammates in front, so the cooperation wasn't perfect. The seven front riders hit the last climb of the Stuivenberg with their advantage intact. Ballan accelerated hard halfway up and none of the others reacted immediately. But Paolini was also feeling strong, and waited until the road levelled out before jumping across to Ballan with 4.5km to go. The rest had no answer, and the two in front rode out to a 16 second lead. Paolini looked the better of the pair as they reached Zottegem, and he also played his cards right by sitting behind Ballan with 1km to go. With time gaps important, Ballan had no choice but to tow Paolini until 200m to go, at which point Paolini sailed off Ballan's wheel to take a comfortable win. Hulsmans led the next group over at just 11 seconds, meaning all of them are very much in contention for the overall classification. The second chase group came in at 45 seconds led by Bennati, and the main bunch was nearly two and a half minutes behind. Tomorrow's second and longest stage is 227km between Zottegem and Koksijde. It should suit the sprinters, but foremost on everyone's mind will be staying out of the crashes.
