The 2025 Tour de France starts this Saturday, 5 July with the Grand Départ in Lille-Nord de France.

For the first time in five years, this year's Tour will be solely within France, with no excursions beyond its borders.

Over its 3,338.8 kilometres (2,075 miles), the race will visit 11 regions in 21 stages and will tackle climbs in the Massif Central, the Pyrenees, the Alps and the Jura.

Last year's yellow jersey winner, Tadej Pogačar will be looking for revenge when the race visits the Col de la Loze (2,304m) on stage 18 – the same mountain on which his great rival, Jonas Vingegaard, blew him away at the 2023 Tour de France.

The 2025 Tour features two time trials – a rolling 33km effort on stage 7 in Brittany and an 11km uphill test on stage 13 in the Pyrenees.

As usual, teams and riders will be bringing their best bikes and equipment to the most important bike race of the year (some of which we got a sneak preview of at the Critérium du Dauphine) – and BikeRadar will have a delegation of tech detectives at the Grand Départ to capture it all.

Read on for a complete list of the bikes in this year’s Tour de France, along with the components they’re fitted with and our pick of some of the new bikes and tech to keep an eye out for.

Tour de France 2025 bike brands

The Tour de France always showcases some of the finest road bikes available.

The 2025 Tour de France peloton consists of 23 teams of eight, making 184 riders in total.

The 18 WorldTour squads receive an automatic invitation to compete, as did the two highest-ranked second-tier ProTeams, with the remaining three teams receiving wildcard invitations. Between them, 21 bike brands are represented.

This year's list of bike brands features plenty of familiar names, such as Specialized, Giant, Pinarello, Canyon and so on. XDS makes its first appearance on cycling's grandest stage.

The Chinese carbon fibre specialist joined the Astana Team as a title sponsor for this season and beyond, and is supplying the Kazakh squad with a full suite of high-end road and time trial bikes.

One notable absence is Scott, because the Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team it sponsors didn't receive a wildcard invitation to this year's Tour. Unfortunately for British fans, that will also see multi-discipline star Tom Pidcock miss out.

What’s new in Tour de France tech?

We'll cover our specific tech predictions for this year's race in a separate feature coming soon, but here are some of the broad bike trends we expect to see shaping the 2025 Tour.

All-rounders are still popular, but watch out for new aero bikes

Kasper Asgreen's Specialized Tarmac SL8 at 2024 Paris-Roubaix
Aero bikes look to be back in fashion at this year's Tour.

For the past few seasons, it has been very fashionable for brands and teams to have one road bike that can turn its hand to everything from Alpine climbs to sprint finishes and cobbled classics.

Bikes such as the Specialized Tarmac SL8, Pinarello Dogma F and Trek Madone SLR have typified this approach in recent years, although some have argued this trend has been driven by certain brands' evolving business strategies as much as performance.

As always, though, these trends are cyclical and with the opening nine stages of this year's Tour being relatively flat, we expect to see a few more dedicated aero road bikes.

Likewise, we can expect to see some proper lightweight climbing bikes being rolled out for the mountain time trial to Peyragudes on stage 13.

Campagnolo is back

Thompson Falcon Super Record Wireless bike at Velofollies
Campagnolo was absent from the Tour de France last year.

The legendary Italian component manufacturer, Campagnolo, had been a fixture of the Tour de France for almost 100 years, but last year it was nowhere to be seen.

This year, the company's fortune's appear to be reversing because it's back in the WorldTour and back at the Tour de France.

It also has a shiny new groupset to show off, called Super Record 13. Unveiled in early June, the groupset brings back fan favourite features such as the iconic 'thumb shifter' and gets one over on Shimano and SRAM by offering the world's lightest 2x13-speed electronic road bike groupset.

Only French team Cofidis will use Campagnolo equipment at this year's Tour, though, with the rest of the teams using either Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 R9200 or the latest SRAM Red AXS groupset on their bikes.

Riders will use big gears, narrow bars and time-trial helmets while they still can

Top riders at the Tour de France are increasingly using narrow bars, long stems and big gears.

One of the big talking points prior to this year's race has been the UCI's announcement of new regulations that will see narrow handlebars, ultra-deep rims and time-trial helmets banned in mass-start road races from 1 January 2026.

Gearing restrictions are also being trialled in August this year, with a potential view to limiting what gear ratios riders can use too.

With any bans not coming into effect until next season, we can expect many riders to take advantage of the current regulations at this year's Tour, however.

According to the UCI, the new regulations have come about as a result of its efforts to improve safety in professional road racing. The long and short of it is that the UCI, and some stakeholders within cycling – including Christian Prudhomme, the director of the Tour de France – feel the riders are now going too fast.

Not everyone agrees, of course – former UCI Hour Record holder Dan Bigham gave a robust rebuttal to Prudhomme late last year, for example. However, those in positions of power are keen to act and appear to have identified equipment as their primary target.

Riders will take risks with tyre choices

Time-trial tyres have become a relatively common sight during road stages at the Tour, as riders chase every possible advantage.

As with disc brakes, it has taken a while for the pro road cyclists to warm to the benefits of tubeless tyres, but almost all teams have now swapped to these from glued-on tubulars or clinchers with inner tubes.

While inopportune flats were a fact of life at past Tours, the sealant in tubeless tyres provides some protection and can help keep you riding even if something sharp pierces your tyre, because it can clot in and plug small holes.

Many teams also now run tubeless inserts, which can provide a run-flat solution and enable a rider to safely carry on riding on a flat tyre until they can get a wheel or bike change.

Given this, many teams and riders have experimented with running super-fast, super-light time-trial tyres in road stages in recent years.

There's an element of risk and reward with this strategy, of course, because an ill-timed flat could cost a rider far more energy than they stand to save by using TT tyres.

However, with the roads used in the Tour being in generally good condition it has, for the most part, proved a successful strategy for many riders so far.
