Team Cycling Plus will be updating you each week with the highs and lows of their training as part of the team. Coach Ben lets us know if the team are sticking to their allocated training...
Coach: Ben Simmons
Ben Simmons runs Elite Wales and his sponsored by Wiggle. He has been enlisted by Cycling Plus to ensure our team of riders are on top form for their cycling season and are able to achieve their goals.
Last week was the first week of prescribed training for the four riders. So after monitoring the riders own training for three weeks and looking at their lifestyle audit which basically shows how much time and when they are able to train, I had allocated them training plans ranging from 7.5 hours up to 10 hours for each of the riders.
After they had sent me their training data for the week, none of the riders have managed to complete the full amount of training hours prescribed. This is mainly due to time commitments with work and family which is perfectly normal; if these guys were full time athletes then there wouldn’t be an excus, but trying to fit in a life too makes it tricky. When it comes to training with a busy lifestyle then you have to use common sense if you can’t fit the training in for that particular day then you can swap days around or do alternative training. For example I have given an alternative roller/turbo session which is not a direct swap for the longer rides but it is better to do something than nothing.
Malcolm has managed to double what he would usually do in a weeks worth of training which is fantastic and has even managed to increase his average speed for his rides. He is now looking to build on this for next weeks training.
Sam has had a really good weeks training and even had a go at a 5 mile time trail which he loved riding and now has the racing bug. Not only this, but he is enjoying his training and almost managed to fit it all in.
Andy is still recovering from his 100 mile sportive which has forced him to reduce his cycling hours, but he did manage to squeeze in his field based fitness test up a 2 mile climb. He can now use this as a bench mark to try and beat every time he repeats the test.
Kay has had a disappointing week of training as she hasn’t been able to do as much training as she would of like to do. She hasn’t had the best of luck with falling ill but has still managed to commute to work. Also she managed to go out for a ride with her partner for the first time in years which is always nice for a psychological boost, especially after a tough week.
I had an excellent weekend at the Wiggle Enduro 6 and managed to win the Elite Men’s Pairs category with my Wiggle team mate Lee Williams. I hope you all enjoyed your bank holiday weekend and continue to enjoy the dry weather while it lasts.
