Team Cycling Plus - Kay Bowen

Struggling to fit in all elements of triathlon training, Kay opts for the sofa instead!

Team Cycling Plus will be updating you each week with the highs and lows of their training as part of the team. Feeling under the weather, Kay fails to get all the hours in this week...

Team member: Kay Bowen

36 year old Kay from Southampton is a very active person. She overcame thyroid cancer last year which has inspired her to try a whole host of new activities, including sailing, tennis, skiing and triathlons. As a triathlete, she already does a lot of cycling, but is keen to work on this aspect of her training. Her goals are to sustain longer distances and to go on a cycling holiday.

I am feeling a bit overwhelmed this week with things other than bike, like the fact that I am not getting in any swimming and only one run a week for the triathlon which is two weeks today! Let’s start with the positive: my husband, Rob and I got out alone for our first ever joint cycle ride in ten years, so that was an event worth celebrating. With me having discovered lots of lanes and virtually traffic free routes around our patch of Hampshire, I was looking forward to taking Rob out exploring while both girls were off doing Brownie/Rainbow events. I felt great getting up some hills and can feel already how a few longer rides have improved my fitness and ability. I was on top of the gears and got the hang of them at last – and could pretty much reliably cleat and uncleat my feet at the right moments.

I was waiting for Rob to meet me at a local farm visitor centre in the sunshine – and then the weather was patchy and some rain fell – my first experience of the Verenti in rain, and I was a bit nervous going down hills, but it didn’t seem to bother the bike at all. Rob mentioned that the handlebars are too wide for me, which might be true, but as I didn’t want to be analysed, I politely asked him to shut up and enjoy the countryside. Great spring flowers out everywhere and the light green spring leaves are a delight even in the rain. I had a migraine twinge and felt sick after only 8 miles, and we plodded on until a lunch stop and in all managed 25 miles.

I am not feeling totally well this week. Both the girls have been off school ill, and where I normally bound up 3 flights of stairs to see a friend I was plodding and out of breath at the top. So, I thought ‘listen to your body Kay’ – and rest. My neck was not quite right on Friday at work, and then today I twisted my back somehow and was breathless with the pain. Now I feel ‘locked up’ – unfamiliar feelings as back pain thankfully is not something I get as a rule.

So the intended evening ride with Rob tonight was cancelled and my planned tri training with a friend in the morning is looking uncertain. Sorry to go on about all my aches and pains this time but that is life and I guess if I try to persist it will have worse effects long term than if I just see it as a short term blip and go with it and lie on the sofa for a few hours instead.
