Tony Martin’s Specialized Tarmac

A closer look at the TT specialist's road machine

Tony Martin will be known as one of the best time-trialists of his generation. Three times world TT champion, Martin also took his national TT title for the sixth time in his career in June.


The German’s impressive individual showings have been emulated in Grand Tour stages, huge power outputs have frequently put his Etixx-Quickstep team mates into contention for victories, and in 2015, a late solo breakaway saw the German take his fourth Tour de France career stage win.

Seen in last month’s Critérium du Dauphiné, we take a look at Martin’s Specialized S-Works Tarmac.

Equipped with Shimano Dura-Ace Di2, the Tarmac sports a 53-39 chain ring and an 11-28 cassette. Finishing kit is supplied by FSA and Specialized, with K-Edge and Tacx providing the Garmin mount and bottle cages respectively.

Martin has been known to customise his saddles. Famously using grip tape during the 2015 Time-Trial World Championships, the German ultimately tore through his skinsuit and eventually his skin, causing an uncomfortable finish to the race. This modification is far less extreme, with the fabric material causing enough friction to reduce movement in the saddle.

Rolling on Specialized’s in-house brand Roval and Specialized S-Works Turbo tubulars, the Tarmac is also equipped with a CeramicSpeed headset and bottom bracket.
