Q: I’m after some wheels to replace the Mavic Crossride Discs on my Chameleon. My budget is £280- £300. I’m quite a large rider so I’m not looking for skinny Kate Moss wheels but I need to ride uphill as well as down so weight is a factor. Any ideas?

A: For £300 there’s a couple of really good options that should accommodate you. Hope’s Pro 2 wheelset was the first thing that sprang to mind for the type of riding you described. Hope’s hubs are legendary pieces of precision machined art. The front hub is also capable of being converted to 20mm axle size should you wish to upgrade to beefier forks. They roll on DT hoops, with a choice of XC- orientated (400g) 4.2 rims or the burlier (500g) 5.1, tied together with quality DT Competition spokes for £260 a pair.

Another option is Mavic’s excellent Crosstrail wheelset, which is both UST and traditional tube compatible, and costs £230 a pair.
